It's like the days of VHS vs Betamax, and I suspect that eventually one format will dominate and be the norm across all ereaders. Some will fall by the wayside and some people will have the "wrong" one gathering dust in a cupboard somewhere. It stinks, but it's what we have to work with as a business, and as writers. I understand that, from a business POV, it makes sense to take them up on the offer. It's one of those "We're so big, we can give away anything for free juuuuuuuust long enough to put those other guys out of business." (Insert maniacal laugh here.) I really wish the open/transparent ideal could be the prominent business practice. I have a Barnes & Noble Nook and I love it, but it's frustrating that some of the books I bought last year can't be read because they're Kindle format, not Nook. It's really deplorable that the technology isn't made to be compatible. I can purchase a DVD of any movie and watch it on any DVD player in the country, but if I buy an e-book, I have to choose between the 2 big dominating providers. Amazon is evil!
