A short interview with author of Xarrok, Catrina Taylor.
What inspired you to start writing?
I started writing when stories started to bubble over my day to day thought process. That was about 12 or 13. I’ve been creating worlds and watching lives flourish in those worlds ever since.
How long did it take for the ideas behind Xarrok to reach their current form? Or has it been a constant evolution?
Xarrok has been an ever developing universe for more than a decade now. It actually started in a very fantasy setting and has developed into a far more science fiction flavor. I love the action that occurs in this universe, as well as the lives that intertwine from the most unlikely places.
What difficulties have you faced in writing the book, and how have you overcome them?
I’ve got two amazing children and the hardest thing to overcome is finding the right balance between writing and chasing or playing with them. I started to wake up about four in the morning and work before the kids go to school. Once the wake, I try to focuse more on them than anything else, even if a story is bubbling to be told. When I get them on the bus, I then have six hours to spend promoting, writing and reading. After they are home, I squeeze in what I can until bed time, but spend the evening more with them than work. After bed, it’s time to work until I pass out and it starts again in the morning. I find that if I stick to this schedule, I get a lot of work done, while still staying fairly balanced. Unfortunately, I can’t say I’ve kept it that way through out, but I do strive for it.
Without giving away too much, what would you say is your favourite part of Birth of an Empire?
My favorite part of Birth of an Empire book 1 is all of the energy developed in the book. It starts out with intensity that builds through out the book.
Where do you see yourself going from here?
From here? Good question. I know I’m going to continue to write. Book Two of Birth of an Empire is more than half way done and I’ve got several layers of Xarrokian fans helping to edit and promote things along the way. My editor is also wonderful about encouraging me to stay on track. Beyond that, I’ll be playing with the kids and helping with homework and teaching them as often as I can.
