Biodegradeable mail sacks.
At Ethics Trading we care about the environment but as a small business any solution has to be cost effective as well as practical in addition to any environmental considerations. So, we have been committed to using recycled packaging where possible but you will have noticed those nasty plastic mailing sacks being used as well. They’ve been a necessary evil because we really didn’t want to pass on the extra cost of biodegradeable ones to you.
While we do manage to reuse packaging most of the time there is only so much that we receive here that can be reused. And your order has to be secure, safe and manageable by the post office, and it has to reach you safely and without getting soaked or damaged. Soap nuts in particular shouldn’t get wet, until you want them to.
It’s a bit of a balancing act.
Imagine my surprise when I went to order more mailing bags and found some that are made from 95% recycled materials and are 100% biodegradeable – for THE SAME PRICE as I usually pay….
So we’ll be trying those out as soon as they arrive and would welcome your feedback if your order arrives in one. Do please let us know what you think. The idea is sound but will they meet our needs in regards to secure and safe packaging?

I got them from a company called “Sensible Supplies” but I think they’re made by “EnviroBags”

Since you’re in the UK and I’m trying to reduce my eco-footprint, I can’t order from you, alas, but I’m so glad to hear about the biodegradable, recycled mail bags! It is so difficult to find vendors who work as hard as you do to make their customers eco-happy. Lucky Europeans to have you! Do you know @myzerowaste? Check her out on Twitter and perhaps link up on her blog, if you’re not already acquainted.

Oh duh. Mrs. Green, @MyZeroWaste was the first to comment on this post. Sorry about that!

Ah, the carbon footprint thing. Tough one.
I do send orders outside Europe if asked nicely… But, like you I prefer to keep it local where I can.
