The future is small…
With all the talk in the media of Recession and financial trouble, job losses and big high street chains closing down, where does that leave the small business? Where does that leave the eco-friendly business and the family run business? What of the sole trader?
Some serious financial trimming is going on here but it’s only what I do every January. As a sole trader and a small business I am aware of every penny spent and received by Ethics Trading. I am aware of the full impact of every stock choice I make.
With big business where there are many people tinkering with all aspects of the business there isn’t the capacity for one person or very few people to get the full picture of what is happening and to react really quickly to solve problems which can then get so big and out of control that they sink the business. In a small business the control is there and we can react, change and be much more dynamic. As a result I firmly believe that we are the future. Small business, online business with fewer overheads and costs, that is the way forwards. We are the ones who will not only survive this recession, we will thrive and grow against all the odds, but only if we get it right, only if we can react fast enough.
So far, January is one of the best months, in terms of sales, that Ethics Trading has had in about a year. It’s a fantastic start to 2009.
Thank you.

Hey you, I think you are right! All these big multi-nationals may have the big pulling power and big buying power, but all they really are is a collection of a lot of different human beings not all working towards the same goal imho. The main thing we forget is that these big companies do not have a life and a mind of their own, they are only as good as their weekest employer. Also, we seem to have a breakdown in philosophy in most of the western world anyway. On the one had we are all supposed to work for big business and for their goals to be our collective goal, but we are also all supposed to be separate from the majority of life on the planet and work hard to get ahead of everyone else and make sure that we are ok. How are those two different viewpoints going to square themselves for the future?

Hi Indie,
Good to see you drop in.
Absolutely spot on – They also have much more to lose and in many cases they’ve lost their humanity to the corporate beast too. People no longer matter, “We’ll just cut some jobs” It’s just numbers on a page and no-one cares. They exist embedded in a culture of waste, of loss leaders, sales and “oh just write it off.”
