An interesting trip to the supermarket

We try to limit our out of town supermarket shopping as much as possible but some days it’s just either unavoidable or, I’ll freely admit to my own fallibility, it’s convenient.

It was raining on Monday and the rain felt hard and cold. We were chilled, fed up and decided to just get the shopping out of the way in one trip – after getting sausages and a roasting chicken from our favourite butchers in town. (roasting chicken to differentiate from the laying chickens we have in the back garden)

So we went out to Tesco. Now a trip round Tesco is usually more expensive than a wander round the separate shops in town, or a trip round Lidl, so I try to buy as little as possible in there – but their milk and bread last longer than anyone else’s and they taste better so we do tend to get those in there…. Anyway, this week we ended up doing the bulk of the shopping in there.

But two things were a pleasant surprise, and one was only apparent when we made dinner last night.

First – when we were at the checkout there were NO plastic carriers to help yourself to. We take our own cloth bags anyway but this is new, there have always been piles of plastic carriers to just take if you wanted them. Now they’re behind the checkout and you have to actally ASK for them! The checkout person said “They’ll start charging for them next.” and she was a bit taken aback when I said that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

The second one was a result of a change in diet for us. My kids like fish fingers, I’ll eat them but I’d rather have a nice bit of fish. So I’ve been steadily trying out “big fish fingers” = battered, fillets of fish. We’ve had haddock from Lidl until now and that comes in a plastic bag and that is inside a cardboard box. We can recycle rthe box but not the bag. This week we got “6 Breaded White Fish Fillets” from Tesco and I was expecting the same. But no. I opened the box, expecting the plastic bag and there wasn’t one! Just a card box to recycle – after we finish the second three.

Nice one Tesco!

  1. Ooo, lovely; what a great experience. I have to say, I boycott Tesco for many reasons, but I’m very impressed with your tales of recent shopping.

Well done Tesco – good to see you making an effort with these things :)

And happy new year to you and your family, Sarah…….

  2. Happy New Year to you too Mrs Green, and the Green family too. Glad to see you evaded the new spam filter!

We tend to minimise Tesco shopping where possible but this week I caved in to convenience and warmth I’m afraid. We’re all human right?

  3. Hiya lovey,
Wow that is brill for Tescos isn’t it. Do fish fingers still come without the plastic there?? They do here, which makes them most attractive for me as something to have in the freezer for the kiddies (yeah and I must admit to being partial to a fish finger sarnie myself!) But the bag thing is very good. I got a rather frosty reception in Sainsbugs in Hove when we were doing our stocking-up on British goodies to come back with us. I too had to ask for carriers, not having brought my own for obvious reasons when all my reusables are here in Italy!! I got a rather frosty reception from the cashier, but it could have been she heard me make comments about there only being 2 tills open with quite a few people queueing and seeing about 6 employees doing nothing but muck about (jan 2nd) the shelves were half empty, there was no marmite(!!!!) but there were those huge trolley things everywhere wrapped in thick plastic obviously waiting for other staff (I overheard an employee telling a woman that she was not allowed to break the plastic to get a bottle of booze out for her. If she wanted it she had to go herself to customer services and ask them to call a manager who ‘might’ be able to get it out for her!!) to put on the shelves. I merely commented that we ultimately pay for them all to wander about in the prices we pay for things… that was all. Ho hum. You pay for carriers here mostly and they are about 10c each so you do think more than you do at the Supermarkets in the UK where you have just been able to take as many carriers as you like.

  4. We are indeed my lovely; you’ll know I give into convenience regularly :D
At -9 temperatures, I don’t blame you for getting everything under one roof…….

  5. Phew….
