Xarrok: Birth of an Empire

A short interview with author of Xarrok, Catrina Taylor.

What inspired you to start writing?

I started writing when stories started to bubble over my day to day thought process. That was about 12 or 13. I’ve been creating worlds and watching lives flourish in those worlds ever since.

How long did it take for the ideas behind Xarrok to reach their current form? Or has it been a constant evolution?

Catrina TaylorXarrok has been an ever developing universe for more than a decade now. It actually started in a very fantasy setting and has developed into a far more science fiction flavor. I love the action that occurs in this universe, as well as the lives that intertwine from the most unlikely places. Read more »

Earthlink: Impact

This week saw the release of the first volume in Sarah Barnard’s new Earthlink series. Impact opens the story with the promise of more to come; Sarah’s working on book 2 right now and has books 3 and 4 in the planning and note making stages.

Earthlink introduces us to Sage, and in Impact she is just eighteen and hasn’t worked out who she is yet. Ever since she hit puberty, Sage has had a voice in her head. Not voices, she’s very clear about that, and not speaking; Sage’s voice doesn’t tell her things, it screams. The voice screams all day and all night and the psychiatrists want her to take mind numbing drugs to keep it quiet, but Sage won’t take the pills.

Earthlink: Impact

Earthlink: ImpactEarth is maturing and finding a voice amongst the complexity of life flourishing and expanding on the surface. The problem is that the dominant species can’t hear her screaming.

Apart from one; Sage Gardiner – a troubled eighteen year old who’s convinced she’s a nutcase.

Earth is being watched closely, for its own protection and to hopefully prevent a repeat of what happened on Mars. Sage is the hope they’ve been looking for and when she endangers her life in a near fatal car wreck, they break all the rules and step in to save her.

Can Sage step into the role planned for her?

Amazon.

Here at Ethics Trading we’re quite fond of the intergalactic entity that is Amazon. Well, OK, maybe not intergalactic but global and if there were the possibility of an Amazon.mars then I bet they’d make it happen. They provide a gateway into the world of Kindle and readers we wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise.kindle

But, their sheer size and dominance over the ereader market goes against the grain for us. At Ethics Trading we believe strongly in the small business, the independent and the local. Amazon is none of these. Amazon monopolises the marketplace and dominates in a way that could be seen as dictatorial.

So, we struggle a bit with that. We want to sell the books we choose to release, and we want good sales for our authors, but we’d prefer to be doing so on a broad platform that includes the smaller sellers, the independents and the new stores. Amazon provides the majority of sales for us, so it’s a bit of a rock and a hard place for us, as a business. Read more »
